Cutting Board Tips
When you're choosing a cutting board a bamboo comes out on top. It's harder than wood, easier on your kitchen knives, it inhibits the growth of bacteria and it does well for the environment. Cutting surfaces such as ceramic, tile or stainless steel does not harbor bacteria and are easy to clean but they make your knives very dull. So you have to sharpen your knife more regularly if you should use these cutting surfaces. When buying cutting board you need to buy more than one, one for meat and the other for vegetables.
This is to prevent cross contamination. Don't buy a bamboo cutting board that's too big or too small for your kitchen, you don't want to have a piece of food sticking off the edge of the board because it's too small and one that's too big may lead to serious accident. Leaving water to dry on bamboo is not good, so remember to dry it of immediately after washing.
To clean it all you need is a little dish soap, a sponge and some hot running water. If it should get colored stained all you would do is pour some salt on the cutting board and rub the area with the sponge. You keep adding the salt and rub with the sponge until the stain is gone.
Rinse off afterwards and then dry it with a clean towel. Season you board with mineral oil at last one time for the month for as long as you have it and when storing it away put it to stand on its side. This is to prevent it from getting warped.
Because the bamboo plant grows so fast there is no need to be cutting down other trees to make a wooden cutting board. Bamboo boards are more sustainable and stranger than wood and looks fabulous whenever you're doing food presentations. Whenever you buy bamboo you are actually saving the trees and the environment. So if you're environmentally conscious and you want wood, buy bamboo cutting boards.
